Management of Epilepsy from a neuropsychological perspective

Our understanding of epilepsy as a neurological disease is constantly evolving as advances in brain imaging techniques and genetics shed evermore light on the mechanisms that underpin brain function and structure. However, whilst epilepsy is often at the forefront of new scientific and medical breakthroughs, it also remains one of the most stigmatized and misunderstood conditions in the world. This presentation will be divided in to four parts:

Inhalt

Part one will provide a brief overview of the epidemiology of the epilepsy to give the audience an idea of the scope of the problem and an update of the latest taxonomies, classifications and terminologies used in both clinical practice and the research.
The second part of the presentation will examine the breadth of the work that neuropsychologists conduct in the assessment and treatment of people with epilepsy.
In the third part the critical role the neuropsychologist plays in the multidisciplinary team approach to epilepsy surgery in the twenty first century.
In the fourth part of the presentation the challenges of living with epilepsy as a highly stigmatized condition, and the role of the neuropsychologist can play in alleviating the comorbidities of epilepsy.
